QW OPP investigate fatal collision near CFB Trenton – Belleville Intelligencer
Two people are dead following the collision of two vehicles Sunday at around 12:35 p.m., say authorities.
The section of Highway 2 running through CFB Trenton was cordoned off to traffic Sunday afternoon after 1 p.m. to contain the scene of the fatal collision.
Ontario Provincial Police turned away motorists at the east end of the base at Whites Road.
Highway 2 at RCAF Road was also closed off with pylons and an Emergency ‘road closed’ sign blocking the road.
Motorists travelling along Highway 2 were rerouted to RCAF Road north to Hamilton Road until early Monday morning as traffic investigators and Quinte West firefighters remained on scene.
OPP East Region confirmed on its twitter account “Quinte [West] OPP is investigating a fatal collision at Old Hwy 2 east of RCAF Road in Trenton. Two people have been killed. One person [was] taken to hospital with unknown injuries.”
An assembly of emergency vehicles could be seen from the road blocks near the main entrance to the military air base.
In a press release, OPP said Monday the “collision involved two motor vehicles, one travelling east bound and one travelling west bound. The driver and passenger in the east bound vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. The lone driver of the west bound vehicle was transported to hospital with unknown injuries.”
Rebecca Beatty, 22, of Quinte West, and Anastasia Collins, 23, were both pronounced dead at the scene, OPP said.
East Region OPP Technical Collision investigators and OPP Collision reconstructionists attended the scene.
The road was closed for approximately 12 hours.
The investigation continues.
