Green bin pilot project launched at QW schools – Belleville Intelligencer

QUINTE WEST – Starting this week, the City of Quinte West is launching a green bin pilot project in two city schools.
St. Mary’s Catholic School and Prince Charles Public School have been selected to take part in the project.
Students at these two schools will now be able to properly dispose of any organic waste they may accumulate throughout the day. Adding green bins to the existing recycling programs of these schools is a small step forward that will have a long-lasting, positive impact.
This initiative aims to divert a significant amount of waste from landfills while educating students on their environmental impact. Composted materials are full of essential nutrients for plant growth and can be used as a natural fertilizer, reducing the need for chemical-based fertilizers.
“We are looking forward to launching this pilot project as it will teach students about proper recycling habits and the importance of reducing waste at a young age,” stated City of Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison. “Stressing the importance of responsible waste management can have a long-term impact on the students’ attitudes.”
The green bins in the schools will serve the same purpose as they currently do for Quinte West residents. For this pilot project, students will only be allowed to compost food scraps in these bins which usually allow for napkins and other compostable materials.
If this pilot project proves to be a success, schools in Quinte West can look forward to seeing more green bins in the future.
